Scrooge and Marley – Must See Holiday Movie

Scrooge & Marley is a modern day variation on Charles Dickens’
classic story of the holidays, “A Christmas Carol.” On Christmas Eve,
Ben Scrooge, the man who hates the holidays, is given the chance to
begin again when he is visited by three spirits – the Ghosts of
Christmas Past, Present and Future. Revisiting the tragic missteps of
his life enables Scrooge to rediscover the joy of the holiday season and
make a journey back to love. Recounted from a gay sensibility with
heart, comedy and music, the magic of Dickens’ timeless tale comes alive
from a fresh perspective that will appeal to audiences of all
persuasions.

I urge you to support this wonderful independent film! It is very well done with excellent acting and SURE TO BRING A TEAR TO YOUR EYE! It is such an awesome cast loaded with great original music!

Chicago to Host 2nd Annual Santa Speedo Gay Run

The 2nd Annual GAY Santa Speedo Run of Chicago takes place this Saturday, Dec. 1st, 2012.

In 2011, over 50 LGBT participants
braved the freezing temperatures and shed their running clothes in favor
of red Speedos to run one mile through Andersonville in the first
annual Santa Speedo GAY Run. The event organized by Karl Sponholtz and his
partner Jeff Colgan
was a benefit for Vital Bridges.
This year, the gay run is moving to Boystown.

This year’s sign-ups are already exceeding last year’s numbers, so the duo decided to move the event from Andersonville to Boystown, PLUS, the weather for this weekend could be near 60! As opposed to last years freezing 28 degrees!

There is a $25 fundraising minimum to participate in the event, which
consists of running one mile in the cold, clad in nothing but a santa
hat, running shoes and a speedo, or some other holiday-themed costume. Over 300 people are expected to participate.

There will be a prize for the top fundraiser as well as a Christmas
raffle. DS Tequila has generously offered half-price food for all
participants on the day of the run and a myriad of other local
businesses, like Taverna 750, Burke’s Public House, Windy City Sweets and Sagin, LLC, have donated to the raffle.

Sign-ups start at noon at Sidetrack,
3349 Halsted St., with the run itself scheduled to take place at 2:00
p.m. For more information, or to see pictures from last year’s event,
check out their Facebook page at  and RSVP to their Facebook event.

ABBA Museum will Open in Stockholm Sweden

MAMA MIA!

A museum dedicated to Swedish pop group ABBA is to open next year in Stockholm.

The museum, backed by former member Bjorn Ulvaeus, will feature some of the band’s glitzy stage costumes, instruments and other mementos. Visitors will also be able to sing along to Abba songs alongside life-size holograms of the group.
Ulvaeus said he hoped all four former ABBA members would attend the opening, set for April or May, but ruled out any chance of a stage comeback. ABBA’s music lives on, with millions of albums sold each year, and through the highly popular stage and film musical “Mamma Mia!”. The city of Stockholm has long considered building a museum for Sweden’s most successful pop group but previous plans fell through. This time, the building is already under construction near a theme park on Djurgarden, one of the Swedish capital’s many islands.

How Do You Decide Where to Travel To?

How do you decide where you plan to travel to?

Do you like history and culture?
or gay fun?

The University of Tennessee and the University of South Carolina are
conducting research concerning the travel motives and expenditures of
members of the LGBT community.

It
is estimated that tourism is a $1.3 trillion industry, of which $65
billion is generated by LGBT tourists (CMI, 2011).
While there
continues to be a vast amount of research conducted on the various
motivators that lead people to travel, there are very few studies that
explore LGBT tourists’ motivations.

Atherton Twins in IRIS in Los Angeles

I first saw the Atherton Twins in Cirque du Soliels Varekai around 2003.  I knew they stayed with the show, a number of years. And while in California last week, discovered  they are now in Cirque show called  IRIS!

Andrew and Kevin were born in the UK, but now live in Los Angeles, California.

Both
were members of the Great Britain gymnastics team until their
retirement from competition at the age of twenty-four years old.

In
2000 Andrew and Kevin joined the world renowned Cirque du Soleil to
develop and create an aerial straps number for their touring show Varekai. They went on to perform 3,034 shows with Varekai.  Never missing a single performance.

Andrew and Kevin left Varekai in August 2010 to begin working on IRIS.  A new resident show created by Cirque du Soleil, exclusively performing at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

IRIS, a Journey Through the World of Cinema. This large-scale production – created exclusively for its permanent home at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles – offers a new take on the art of cinema as only Cirque du Soleil could imagine it. IRIS is an inventive spectacle that combines acrobatics, dance, projections and live music. It takes the audience on a mesmerizing journey that blurs boundaries between live performance and moving images.

IRIS explores the different techniques of cinema, as it evolves from black and white to colour in a world of shadows and light. The story unfolds as our two young heroes venture through a universe that brings to life a succession of cinematic genres, reawakening the limitless potential of this art form.

Join acclaimed Choreographer/Director Philippe Decouflé and Oscar-nominated Composer Danny Elfman on this fantastic voyage, breathtakingly unfurled with 72 performers, 200 costumes, 8,300 square feet of performance floor, 174 loudspeakers, 603 lighting features, 20 video projectors and 160,000 watts of sound.

The are some gorgeous images of the guys on their site!

Social Outreach Seattle Releases Approve 10 R-74 Ads

Social Outreach Seattle (SOSea) released the first of over 10 Approve
Referendum 74 campaign ads to be released one a day, once a day, from October 1 – 15.

SOSea: Straight Allies
Throughout
the history of minorities securing civil rights, there have been
individuals that are part of the majority who have the foresight to see
progression as something to welcome, and stand up for the
disenfranchised. For the LGBTQ movement, these individuals are
manifested as Straight Allies.
SOSea
encourages ALL Straight Allies to come out in public support of
Marriage Equality and to vote to Approve Referendum 74 in November.

we believe that by showing our differences (and presenting them in a

Allied communities will hear the message loud and clear that what we are
after is equal right, unequivocally, as who we really are: a wonderful,

work from “Pilgrimage,” a project featuring a series of photographs of
interiors, landscapes and talismanic objects attached to historical
figures—Abraham Lincoln, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Emily Dickinson, Georgia O’Keeffe,
Annie Oakley, and Elvis Presley, among others. “Pilgrimage” was organized by the
Smithsonian American Art Museum

“Annie Leibovitz” is organized by Bill Horrigan,
Wexner Center’s curator-at-large, in collaboration with Jill
Davis, director of exhibitions management. Both worked closely with Liebovitz
and her studio to conceive this unique presentation.  A printed gallery guide will accompany
the exhibition.

Annie Leibovitz began her career in
1970 as a photojournalist for Rolling Stone magazine, while she was a student at
the San Francisco Art Institute.  In
1983, she joined the staff of the revived Vanity Fair and was established as the
foremost rock music photographer and an astute documentarian of the social
landscape. At Vanity Fair, and later at Vogue, she developed a large body of
work that expanded her collective portrait of contemporary life.

Leibovitz has had unique access to many of the most
notable figures of our time. She has photographed
U.S. presidents from Richard Nixon to Barack Obama as
well as hundreds of athletes, actors, artists, dancers, musicians, fashion
designers, scientists and business leaders. She also has created several
influential advertising campaigns, including her award-winning portraits for
American Express and the Gap.  By no
means are all of Leibovitz’s subjects famous.  In special projects that became books on
women and music, she brought her approach to portraiture to figures who might
not necessarily be featured in a magazine. Leibovitz has been designated a
Living Legend by the Library of Congress. She lives in
New
York with her
three children, Sarah, Susan and Samuelle.

Q Capital Hill Dance Bar Opens in Seattle

Q Capitol Hill Opens in Seattle
by Shaun Knittel
Best Gay Cities Staff Writer
The much anticipated Q Capitol Hill, a 12,000-square-foot dance club in Seattle’s gay neighborhood, experienced a grand opening on September 8 that could only be described as perfect. There was a line around the block, guests were gay and straight alike, and if social networks had anything to say about it, Q is a hit.
The key to Q’s – seriously – grand opening success had little to do with any one person or scene, but everything to do with the aesthetic, a state-of-the-art sound system, and Q’s mantra, “Music is our message.”
Simply put – Q Capitol Hill looks and sounds better than any other club on The Hill … or the entire City for that matter.
The owners installed a custom system from Funktion One and lighting design by SJ Lighting. C Scott Smith, managing partner of Q, promised Seattleites a space that “gets back to basics of a what a club should be about.” According to Smith those basics are the best Dj’s on the planet, playing on the finest sound system, while showcasing emerging local musical talent. However, Smith didn’t stop there. Moving beyond the basics to the must-have’s, he told the gays and straights that Q would be a club that has stunning interior design and lighting, and would provide impeccable service to its customers.
That’s a tall order to fill. Only, Smith and his team nailed it. Q Capitol Hill is exactly as advertised.
Les Sterling, managing editor at the entertainment blog Seattle Gay Scene, called the opening “a smashing success.”
“There were endless comparisons to clubs in new York, London, Chicago and LA all throughout the evening among our group of people,” He wrote in a September 10 blog entry Why Q Works (http://www.seattlegayscene.com/2012/09/why-q-works.html).
While Sterling praised Q’s round bar design, unisex bathrooms, and interior entry queue (which is brilliant in a city like Seattle where it rains more than it shines) he points out that with Q’s “strategic and brilliant lighting” is “purposeful.”
“One of the things that grosses me out faster than just about anything at a club or a bar, is if the walls and ceiling are painting (sic) matte black, and there’s no lighting to speak of,” said Sterling. “If a bar is that dark, it’s because they’re trying to hide their ugly – Q wants you to see EVERYTHING they have to offer.”
There is no denying that Q looks good. Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, an award-winning firm best known recently for their Apple Stores, as well as Seattle City Hall, designed the club. Robert Miller of the Seattle office oversaw the project.
Once inside, customers will find all the things you would expect from a modern night club like a coat check, a mezzanine (overlooking the dance floor and bar), and hot bartenders. But there are a few items that make Q stand out. First and foremost The Bourbon Bar.
Q’s bar program features a vast collection of American bourbons. Smith moved to Seattle in 2003, but is originally from Kentucky where his family has deep bourbon ties. The Bourbon Bar, featured prominently at the frontend of the club (which is actually the back end of the club, although it is closest to Broadway) serves as either a semi-private or private area and can accommodate up to 25 people. It isn’t VIP exactly, (Smith has said of Q, “We want to avoid the elitist attitudes of upscale lounges with separate VIP areas.”) but it is far enough removed from the intensity of the dance floor that once you are situated in The Bourbon Bar, even with the EDM music playing, you feel comfortable and want to settle in.
What also makes Q stand out is the customer service. While you would think that customer service would be at the top of any bar or nightclub’s list of rules, it unfortunately falls by the wayside at many Capitol Hill waterholes. Q is different. And it starts at the door (shouldn’t it always?) and is consistent all throughout the entire staff. Smith has hired what he calls “Security Concierge” instead the more vulgar, albeit realistic “security guards.” Normally I would call bullshit and point out how pretentious that is but the truth is, the security team was so nice, so alert and communicative, they really do fit the Q’s title for them.
When Q owners first announced the club’s creation, Smith and his business partner were unclear if Q would be a gay dance club or not; instead Q released a statement that said, “At Q, everyone is welcome.”
That didn’t go over so well.
Seattle is what I like to describe as a “little big city.” Meaning, it’s not as big as Los Angeles, and it’s not as small as Bakersfield. If Seattle were porridge it would be “just right.” Word travels fast in the Emerald City – especially on The Hill. So when locals got wind that the old auto garage space at 1426 Broadway was being remodeled into a behemoth of a dance club, excitement and speculation ran wild.
When gay residents found out that Q’s owners were previously involved in the New York City club scene (Back in Chelsea, Smith was a part of the creation of XL, a gay club) they assumed Q would plant its rainbow flag and all would be right in the world.
Q did plant their rainbow flag – but they did it in the 2012 way. These days it is all about being inclusive.
Smith, who is gay, maintains, “We are a Capitol Hill nightclub. And that means that everybody that is part of this neighborhood is welcome at Q.”
In the weeks leading up to the September 7 Exclusive (invite only) Preview Party, which featured an open bar, light and sound display, and acted as a sneak peak for the roughly 800 people “on the list” and the September 8 Grand Opening, it became clear that Q would not lose customers to this notion that in 2012 bar and nightclub owners should still have to declare just how gay the space will be. It’s located on Capitol Hill – trust me, it’s gay.
Q Capitol Hill is open 7 nights a week at 1426 Broadway (between Pike and Union). For more information go to www.qcapitolhill.com.

Rainbow Streets will Stay in West Hollywood

LA’s  WEST HOLLYWOOD has decided it will permanently
keep this year’s Pride month rainbow crosswalks.

The walks span San Vicente
Boulevard at Santa Monica Boulevard,  and was voted by the West Hollywood City
Council earlier this week to keep them on permanently. Initially after Gay Pride month,  the bricks were to be restored the to their original red color,
but they have proved so popular, they will now be a permanent part of
the popular LGBT destination of the city, in the heart of WeHo  Boystown.

Patch
reported that Councilmember John Duran said the crosswalks, as well as
the rainbow flags along Santa Monica Boulevard, are important for the
soul of the city. He said while locals may take such things for granted,
visitors do not. “[The crosswalks] are critical to the tourists and
young gay and lesbian people and not-so-young gay and lesbian people who
are passing through … They cannot believe that they actually see a
municipality where the rainbow colors are on display all year long. It
tells them it is a sanctuary. It tells them there is a safe place in
America where the LGBT community is celebrated,” he said.

Hocking Hills State Park Voted BEST Campgroud in USA

The premier website for camping and hiking, Tripleblaze.com, has just released its list of Best Campgrounds in America, and Hocking Hills State Park is now ranked as the #1 campgound in the United States.  Located in the heart of Ohio’s stunning Hocking Hills region, the campground beat out hundreds of camping sites across America, including the famed Yosemite National Park, which came in second, and Mt. Rainier National Park, which is ranked #14.  Tripleblaze.com uses a specially designed algorithm to rank campsites and determine the popularity of each one.  The system accounts for the average ratings, number of reviews and the number of people who have camped or wish they could stay at the campground.

Trailblaze describes Hocking Hills State Park Campground as offering “a variety of recreational opportunities in a splendid natural setting. Towering cliffs, waterfalls and deep hemlock-shaded gorges lure the hiker and naturalist and serve as a backdrop to popular facilities and accommodations.”

Tripleblaze.com is the foremost destination for people to learn about U.S. campgrounds, hiking trails and outdoor recreation gear.  The site posts reviews of campgrounds around the country and gives members the ability to post their own reviews of campgrounds they have visited.  The top feature of the site is the camp ground and hiking trial ranking system, implemented to give users insight into the parks in the country.  It also ranks outdoor gear and hiking trails.

Along with being home to the best campground in the U.S., Hocking Hills is also considered the “canopy tour capital of the Midwest.”  Throughout the lush forests of Hocking Hills exists miles of ziplines, giving campers and other visitors a chance to view the area from above.  However, Ziplines are just one of the many attractions to the Hocking Hills area.  Campers can hike among rugged cliffs, soaring rock faces and roaring waterfalls of Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave or Cedar Falls.  Travelers seeking a break from hiking they can go horseback riding, kayaking or rent ATVs to ride through the immense forests.  Visitors can also tour the last washboard factory in America, or even learn how to blow glass jewelry from a local artist.  No matter what visitors come to do, they will not be disappointed by the thousands of acres of natural scenic beauty of Ohio’s Hocking Hills.

We have told you about the AMAZING B&B we stayed in last year in Hocking Hills.  And it is so close to hustle and bustle of the very gay Columbus Ohio you can easily spend time in the whole area.

Located 40 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio, the Hocking Hills region offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences that make every day feel like Saturday, with plenty of Admission: FREE activities. The region boasts a wide variety of affordable lodging, from camping, cabins and cottages to hotels and inns.  In addition to hiking trails, parks and forests, the Hocking Hills is the canopy tour capital of the Midwest, with 50 ziplines being offered via three distinct guide services.  Unique gift and antique shops, canoeing, horseback riding, golf, spas and more add to the allure of the Hocking Hills as the perfect place to unplug. San Diego Gay Pride July 21

LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY: Carl DeMaio invites community to reception, march with him in San Diego Pride Parade

This November, San Diego has a strong chance of electing its first
LGBT mayor – an amazing development that reflects the diversity and
acceptance that we’re proud of in San Diego.

I’m hoping you will help Carl make history in America’s Finest City!

Yes, my friends, I have a personal interest in this mayoral election.
Carl is my partner, and we’ve been together for nearly four years. He
has been nothing but loving and supportive of me, encouraging me in my
business efforts as publisher of Hale Media, the parent company of San Diego Gay & Lesbian News and SDPIX magazine.

Carl has also supported me in the many causes that I care so deeply
about in our LGBT community. He shares in my financial commitment to
Hillcrest Pride Flag project, for example, which will be unveiled in a
public ceremony on Friday, July 20.

Carl has stood proudly with me at so many LGBT community events in
San Diego, so it puzzles me that some people in our community try to
label him unfairly.

Let me make this one point clear. My Letter to the Community today is
NOT an endorsement by SDGLN, … just me speaking from the heart about
the person closest to his heart: I know where Carl stands, and I stand
with him.

Let me share a few things you may not know about Carl:

— As the first openly gay man elected to City Council, he made representing the LGBT community a priority.

— He helped lead the City Council resolution to ask the Pentagon to repeal its discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

— He supported the City’s first Equal Benefits Ordinance, which will provide equality in benefits for domestic partners.

— He is on the record for supporting marriage equality.

— He supported the designation of Harvey Milk Street in our Hillcrest neighborhood.

— He supported the Pride Flag Project in Hillcrest.

— He has raised thousands of dollars to support LGBT organizations
that provide essential care to our community such as Stepping Stone,
Being Alive and Mama’s Kitchen.

— He helped to bring the Trevor Project to San Diego – to provide
support for LGBT youth in our schools, including the establishment of a
suicide hotline.

I’d be honored to have your support of Carl’s historic campaign for
San Diego mayor. I know that Carl will be proud to represent the LGBT
community as Mayor – and all San Diegans as well — but he needs the
help of the LGBT community to get elected.

Please join Carl and myself for a champagne reception right before
the San Diego Pride Parade! We’ll be gathering at 10 am Saturday, July
21, at the SDGLN office in Hillcrest, which is along the parade route.

Find out more details or RSVP to the champagne reception HERE.

Those who wish can join Carl and myself and other supporters as we march in the Pride Parade. See you Saturday!

Star maps with Josh Flagg in Los Angeles

so I don’t know about this app……is it an invasion of privacy?

A new iPhone tool from “Million Dollar Listing’s” Josh Flagg includes a directory of hundreds of Los Angeles-area celebrity homes.

The Huffington Post got the scoop on this in  May,  and was quickly followed KEN WILLIAMS  (of SDGLN)  interview with Josh that was published on May 25.

Hollywood stars, take note: There’s now an easier way for gawkers and stalkers to figure out where you live.

Josh Flagg, the real estate agent made famous by Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing, has launched an iPhone app that includes a directory of hundreds of Los Angeles-area properties associated with celebrities. The app, called Star Maps, differentiates itself from its traditional paper brethren by using the phone’s GPS function to direct users to properties they’d like to see.

The stargazing gawkers reportedly add lots of $$$  to the  Los Angeles’ tourism business. It is estimated  millions of dollars in revenue annually are made off this sector.  Competition is tough.  Starline Tours and newer fly-by-night tour and map purveyors are all competing.

“It is cutthroat out there,” notes Leron Gubler, president of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “They yell at each other; they yell at tourists.

The app is 99 cents. = Create your own customized guided tour to see the homes of your favorite
Hollywood stars. Josh Flagg, star of Bravo’s hit TV series “Million
Dollar Listing,” takes the star maps sold on Los Angeles street corners
and brings them to your iPhone. Star Maps includes an extensive database
of stars’ homes, top-notch GPS technology, and tons of interesting
facts and photos. All information is backed by years of public records,
which guarantees that all the information is accurate.   Search by name – or most popular. More names added soon!

Mariela Castro to Visit San Francisco

Anticipation over a multiday San Francisco visit by the niece of
Fidel Castro has thrust The City into U.S. presidential election
politics while stirring up some classic fears of communist infiltration.

Sexologist and gay rights activist Mariela Castro — the daughter of
Cuban President Raúl Castro — was granted an exception to strict
international travel restrictions by U.S. officials and obtained a visa
for her trip. She plans to participate in panels on LGBT issues in
health and culture at San Francisco General Hospital and the downtown
Marriott Marquis, where the Latin American Studies Association is
holding a conference.

Castro is not expected to grant interviews during her visit, but she
will also appear at the LGBT Center on Market Street tonight for a
discussion slated to include audience questions. And while Cuba hasn’t
always been known for its support of gay rights — with the 1959
communist revolution leading to persecution of homosexuals with
imprisonment and “re-education camps” — local LGBT leaders are pointing
to Mariela Castro as
someone who is helping to change the legacy her family helped establish.

“She has a unique position as the president’s daughter, and she has a
lot of influence in the country,” said Jeff Cotter, the executive
director of the San Francisco-based Rainbow World Fund. “That sends a
really fantastic message to everybody that it’s time for change.”

WARNING: Gays at DisneyWorld in Orlando!

This is so funny – and tragic!

The Florida Family Associations  spends about $20,000, to fly planes over Disney World, warning potential heterosexual visitors about gay people visiting the park for the annual Gay Days. (this photo is from last year).

The FFA writes:

Florida Family Association has received
many, many (really?)  letters and emails from people across the country who
patronized Disney World in Orlando to find themselves in the middle of
one of the annual Gay Days at Disney.  The most recent letter we
received was from Willis in Sarasota who wrote “Just a note to let you
know that about 18 years ago my wife and I and our 2 year old
granddaughter were at Disney World when it was ‘Gay Day.’  It was the
most deplorable sight that we ever saw.  I thank you so much for the
vision of the airplane banner warning people.”

We want to warn
families before they expose their children to Gay Day’s same-sex
revelry, before they pay money to Disney for parking, admission,
novelties and food.  We also want to send a message that Gay Day’s
public promotion of homosexuality to a captured audience inside the park
is wrong.

They have nothing better to do with their money?

Gay in Santa Fe: Santa Fe LGBT Summer Travel

Santa Fe’s extensive gay and lesbian population is in every part of the city, throughout every business district, and fully integrated into Santa Fe life. From gay-friendly clubs, restaurants and shops, to a number of TAG Approved hotels the city is a hot spot for GLBT travel.

Santa Fe traces its LGBT roots most notably to the migration of artists that came to the area in the early 20th Century in search of new subject matter, new environments, and fresh inspiration all of which they found in abundance in New Mexico. For the GLBT traveler, Santa Fe offers a refined, romantic, laid back town that provides sophisticated relaxation on all levels. Whether it is visual and performing arts, shopping, outdoor exploration, dining, experiencing the city through its endless hands on and creative opportunities, festivals and events, or relaxing with some simple down time and pampering, there is never a lack of possibilities for getting the most out of Santa Fe.

The calendar gets very full in the summer when Santa Fe is at its most vibrant. Coming events of interest include:

June 23 – Santa Fe Pride Festival

June 13-15 – Santa Fe International Folk Art Market

July 12-15 – ART Santa Fe International Art Fair

July 28-29 – Annual Spanish Market

June 29-August 25 – The Santa Fe Opera summer season

August 2-5 – SOFA West

August 18-19 – 91st Annual Santa Fe Indian Market

A list of Santa Fe TAG-Approved hotels, gay-oriented events, and additional information on Santa Fe as a gay destination appears on the Santa Fe Convention & Visitors Bureau’s web, www.santafe.org/gay
