Fogo de Chao and Awesome Wines from VIK

There is nothing better than a fantastic glass of wine with dinner!

We recently visited the Fogo de Chao (pronounced fogo-dee-shown) in River North for their announcement of a new partnership with award-winning Chilean VIK Winery. These VIK wines are only available at Fogo!

The VIK vineyard is affectionately called the “Place of Gold”, offering a variety of unequaled terroir, small microclimates, coastal breezes; giving their wines the complexity sought after to create the best wine in South America.

If you get to Chile, they have an unbelievable hotel and grounds! You can visit the vineyards, the wine spa, hotel and spectacular grounds. (photo to left).

Fogo has partnered with VIK, which is a holistic Chilean vineyard creating world class wines, to offer its award-winning and best in category wines at Fogo de Chão locations nationwide.

These 3 wines join the Wine List:

La Piu Belle, Red Blend, Cachapoal, Chile, 2011
Intense and well-balanced with notes of berries, wildflowers, spices and a touch of oak. Flavor of cranberries, the palate is incredibly fresh, silky smooth, with body and structure.

Milla Cala, Red Blend, Cachapoal, Chile, 2013
Incredibly vibrant red fruit aromas, elegant tannins and incredibly smooth mouth feel. Fresh spices, perfume and berry aromas accented with hints of toast and maple. In the mouth, black cherry and plum are underscored by a hint of black licorice.

VIK, Red Blend, Cachapoal, Chile, 2012
Elegant and balanced wine, dynamic with high precision of tannins and great structure that deliver an exquisite mouth feel. A mixture of aromas, including strawberry, raspberry and vanilla. Spicy and savory dark berry fruit on the tongue, tempered by an elegant structure.

The founders of Fogo de Chão grew up on a traditional Southern Brazilian farm in the Serra Gaucha. It is here that they learned to cook in the churrasco grilling tradition that would become the backbone of their story.

The founding brothers left the quaint, mountainous countryside of Rio Grande do Sul to Rio and São Paulo for formal churrasqueiro training, all while developing the Fogo concept. They had several resturants in brazil before coming to the US. premiere.

At the requests of loyal American guests, the Fogo concept was exported to the U.S. with a stateside debut in Dallas, Texas, in 1997. Between 1997 and 2013, this pioneering churrascaria continued its expansion in Brazil and the U.S. opening 29 new restaurants.

Just before Christmas 2013, Fogo opened a three story, 16,000 square foot flagship location in New York City. The stunning architectural design includes a seventeen foot bas-relief sculpture of Antonio Caringi’s, O Laçador, a historical monument in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The culinary team has continued the tradition of developing new menu creations rooted in the Brazilian tradition that push forward the Brazilian churrasco experience. In 2013, new seafood dishes were introduced. Later that year, the Bar Fogo concept emerged within Fogo restaurants, introducing guests to new Brazilian-inspired small plates, award-winning wines and cocktails. The culinary team is always testing and tasting new items for possible inclusion.

With the holidays just around the corner, consider Fogo de Chao for a group dining experience!

An elegant Brazilian dining experience presented by their helpful and knowledgeable staff will make Fogo de Chão the perfect location for your group or private dining event. Holiday parties, Corporate events, Lunch and Learn, any celebration!

Dallas Gay FundRaising Super Hero Patti Le Plae Safe

DALLAS VOICE did a great article this week  on Rodd Gray aka Patti Le Plae Safe.

For 25 years now,  has lived sort of a double life: By day, he is mild-mannered hair stylist Hott Rodd the Hair God, but by night he transforms into , fundraising super hero!  Raising thousands of dollars for  AIDS charities, as well as other causes.

Gray described himself as an independent person who can take care of himself, and who also wants to try to help take care of others, too. It’s a philosophy that grew, he said, from his Orange Power, the name he has for his personal spirituality that grew out of a blend of what he saw as the best teachings from more traditional teachings.

“I just think of it as this warm, orange glow that surrounds me and protects me, and that makes me want to keep doing the right thing,” Gray said. “That’s what it’s about, really: doing the right thing. Paying it forward.

“I watched that movie, Pay It Forward, back when it came out, and it really changed my life,” Gray continued. “That’s what I had always tried to do anyway, but that movie really made me think about it, really made me recommit myself to that.”

Gray said he “stopped counting” years ago, but that he estimates that Patti Le Plae Safe, in all her incarnations and at events around the country, has raised “well over $1 million” for charity through the years. But he is also quick to add that it’s not the amount that’s important; what’s important is that he tried.

PLEASE  read the full article at the Dallas Voice.  It is very heartwarming, inspirational, and motivational

GOING DOWN IN LA LA LAND with Casper Andreas and Matthew Ludwinski

 The MUST-SEE LGBT
Film in 2011  is
GOING DOWN IN LA LA LAND

Director Casper Andreas makes a departure from his previous films with “Going Down in La La Land”. It’s an adaptation of Andy Zeffer’s “slightly autobiographical” novel. Andreas is best known for his comedies “Slutty Summer” and “A Four Letter Word.”

A true New Yorker he captures the spirit of that city. He makes entertaining films that just so happen to be gay. They explore love and relationships with hilarious dialogue and a sense of whimsy and delight without leaning on typical gay tropes like gratuitous nudity and bad acting.

Not only is “Going Down in La La Land” set in Los Angeles but it also veers a little darker than Andreas’ earlier films. Adam (Matthew Ludwinski) is the epitome of “fresh meat.” He moves to LA with no job, headshot or clue. His best friend Candy (Allison Lane) is an aspiring actress who is a little long in the tooth but not lacking in enthusiasm. Unable to keep a job, he is lured into the world of porn by a sweet-talking photographer (Casper Andreas). He soon begins escorting and quickly falls in love with a high profile sitcom star John (Michael Medico). Life get dark fast and quickly slips out of his control.

Despite the somewhat dark themes of escorting and crystal meth abuse, there are some funny and delightful moments of the film. Andreas manages to capture the spirit of living in Los Angeles and its stunning and eccentric inhabitants. There’s hope and pathos in people trying their damndest to make a name for themselves. Like the source material, the film doesn’t give you what you would expect and has surprising and even tender fairy tale moments. There are even a few bitchy soap operatic lines just for good measure.

Ludwinski is realistic as the attractive yet simple goober that is easily led into a world of porn, drugs and prostitution. Andreas shows his acting versatility with his realistic and eerie portrayal of a crystal meth addict. The star of the film is by far Allison Lane who steals every scene as the definitive deluded actress. She’s willing to do anything to pay her rent and to make it in Hollywood except get a job. Embrem Pictures regular Jesse Archer makes a departure from his fun and frisky Luke character to play Adam’s bitchy boss Matthew. However, sadly he is not around half as much as he needed. There are also hilarious cameos by Judy Tenuta, Perez Hilton, Bruce Villanch and Alec Mapa.

WATCH FOR IT IN THE COMING WEEKS –

May 7 The Boston LGBT Film Festival
(Andreas to attend)

The Rainbow Film Festival in Honolulu

& co-star Alec Mapa to attend)

Lady Gaga Stops by The Round Up Saloon in Dallas

THESE  cowboys were thrilled to meet Lady Gaga when she popped into their local bar this week.

The pop star was just as happy – when she first visited The  Round-Up Saloon  in Dallas, Texas, she was an unknown aspiring artist.

Two years later she dropped in for a drink fresh from her huge stadium performance at the American Airlines Center.

This time she received a huge reception, with one over-eager fan even climbing up to the roof area to get her to sign her arm.

The owners Alan Pierce and Gary Miller first met Gaga when her tour manager contacted them to ask if she could perform a slot in summer 2008.

They said they weren’t keen, as ‘the next Madonna’ wasn’t the usual type of act to perform at the bar.

But the two gave Gaga a chance and she played a couple of songs.

Two years later she was back in the city as part of her world tour, and surprised them by booking out the roof area and arriving with her 15-strong entourage, including her mother, to celebrate her whirlwind success.

Pierce told Thecount.com : ‘She was nice and wonderful now, as she was before she became a big star.’

And Gaga even got a memento of her visit – a belt buckle.

Gay Dallas Dining – World Class Foodie City

With a density of restaurants greater than New York City, Dallas is truly a food-lover’s town. While first-time visitors might conjure images of Texas steakhouses and barbecue joints, Dallas long ago found its way onto America’s culinary  foodie map with innovative restaurants and talented chefs mining the flavors of American, Italian, Asian and Mexican cuisine.

On our recent trip to Dallas I had some of the BEST Mexican food I have ever eaten in my life at Cyclone Anaya .  They have 7 locations around Dallas and we dined at the OakLawn/Cedar Springs location. Lots of  LGBT people here on weekend nights, dining before an evening out at the clubs, right around the corner. (Mondays and Tuesdays they offer  half-priced bottles of wine!)

Outstanding Guacamole, Lump Crab Nachos and Lobster Enchiladas in Chardonnay cream sauce!  OMG! The flavors and tastes were amazing! The Carne Asada a la Tampiquena is probably the best marinated piece of  skirt steak I’ve ever put in my mouth. Tender, juicy, delicious. It’s the kind of steak cows give their lives for!

Portions are large here –  and I am the kind of dinner that likes to try and share a lot of different things. So unless you are REALLY  HUNGRY, keep that in mind.

Cyclone Anaya’s restaurants present an upscale variety of hand-made gourmet menu items carefully prepared from scratch, using only the finest ingredients. The menu showcases “Fine Mex,” a wonderful blend of the traditional and the modern. They also have a well-earned reputation for their legendary margaritas and even make their  own Agave Tequila. They are also known for  dramatic artistic presentation and precision managed restaurants. “We focus enormous detail on the dining experience, from our stunning architecture to custom “made to order” plating.”

There are lots of restuarants in the neighborhood.  Black-Eyed Pea Restaurant   is right on Cedar Springs Road.  214-521-4580.
A very popular restaurant  with a combination of down-home cooking like chicken-fried steak, meatloaf and healthy fare including terrific seafood entrees.

Zini’s  Pizza  is a  great late night spot right in the heart of the neighborhood, located on Cedar Springs Road also. Full line of lunch and dinner pizza and Italian food. Great spot for after-the club-gatherings on weekend late nights.

DISH at ILUME brings chic to Cedar Springs!  The Ilume  Luxury mixed-use complex has been putting together an entire block of gay chic! “We want to be the signature anchor for the street that compliments what’s on the street,” Luke Crosland, owner of Crosland Group says . “We want the excitement and energy. This is a passionate community with a long history.”

The new hip DISH brings design, cocktails and food to town. Walk through the doors, just past the large, gorgeous patio, and a stylish, sophisticated space awaits, as inviting as it is stunning. The attention to detail and whimsical touches (cone-shaped mashed potatoes with the evening special!) are what will keep us coming back again and again. Delicately thin-and-crispy flatbreads are a great starter to share or more than enough for a satisfying meal. From the hosts at the front door to the servers’ assistants, the restaurant already runs like a well-oiled machine, amazing for its short time on this earth. Service is attentive, but not obtrusive, and the servers all seem to know the menu well.

And if it’s meat you’re after, THE hot  spot to go to is Al Biernats . 5 Star Dining with many of the Dallas Who’s-Who’s  here. All the A-list celebrities dine here while visiting Dallas.  The parking lot was filled with the ultimate in luxury cars. With its rosy glow, vaulted ceilings, and domed bar, Al Biernat’s doesn’t look like your average chophouse. And it’s not. Billed  as “much more than a great steakhouse!”  Their menu rises above the traditional grill menu, with popular entrees such as Pan Seared Sea Bass over Lobster Risotto, Australian Cold Water Lobster Tail, Veal Osso Bucco, Colorado Lamb Chops or Elk Filet. I had to have meat! The 14oz  filet mignon was  melt-in-your-mouth delicious.  The extensive wine list offers over 650 rare selections and a sommelier’s expertise. Al Biernat personally greets you at the door to ensure your delightful dining experience!

And what trip to Dallas would not be complete without a stop to the flagship Neiman Marcus , a Dallas icon?!

Since the early 1900’s , the renowned department store’s flagship location sits on Ervay Street between Main and Commerce.  The structure has been expanded both horizontally and vertically many times.

Not only known for it’s amazingly unique selection of merchandise, but lunch at the Zodiac is ALWAYS  A  TREAT!  The elegant restaurant has been serving
fine cuisine for over 50 years and  features an exquisite, classic menu selection. Sip a martini at the sleek, modern glass-top bar while you mingle with the who’s-who of downtown.

It’s a classic treat like  lunch at Fred’s in Barneys or BG in Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. Delicious seasonal entrée selections or  just experience their famous Mandarin Orange Soufflé. It’s a must-do!

This is just a sampling of what Dallas has to offer!

Whether you want a  $75 piece of steak or just a  delicious $8 old-fashioned Hunkys Hamburger , it’s all here  in Dallas.

Dallas is truly a one size fits all shoe. Whether you are visiting, passing through or are a current resident, we invite you to explore and enjoy all that our community has to offer.

We just got back from visiting Dallas recently.  A dozen or so LGBT writers from around the world  were invited to tour Dallas and see all that it has to offer. (Big Thanks to American Airlines and George Carranhco in their Rainbow Division !)

Everything is bigger in Texas, that’s  for sure!  Big Culture, Big  City, Big Nightlife in Big gayborhoods and lots of BIG HEARTS and KINDNESS.  What a friendly city! And coming from Chicago, where we have   about 18 bars and nightclubs, I was   impressed with the Dallas Tavern Guild  and all their clubs in  Cedar Springs and surrounding neighborhoods. Over 21 clubs – and several of them  HUGE  multi-leveled, multi-venued clubs!  And we toured them ALL.  In  4  days!  My liver needed a rest, to say the least, when I got home.

And unlike many big cities, the cost of drinking in Dallas is releatively inexpensive.  Where most big cities will charge you $6-$10 for  weak cocktails, I don’t think I ever paid more  than $4-6  for most any good strong drink. And many bars do promotional nights with 50% off  and discounted drinks! So  your dollars go a LONG way in Dallas! And while many clubs may have a theme like  leather/levi  or  Abercrombie or  lesbian,  everyone is welcomed everywhere with a smile, which I found so refreshing!

In the coming weeks and months, we’ll be sharing all we discovered in this great city. From fabulous shopping, art, cultutre, and food to everything LGBT  and  LGBT friendly that Dallas has to offer!

So this week, we’ll give you the skinny on the BIG NIGHTLIFE and  DALLAS LGBT  BARS and CLUBS

We just got back from
a great trip to Dallas!

With a diverse and vibrant GLBT community, Dallas welcomes travelers and residents to come out and enjoy the many things that make this progressive city one of the most gay-friendly cities in the United States. A huge selection of hot nightlife , fantastic dining options, fabulous shopping and the largest contiguous urban arts district in the nation.

THIS WEEKEND,
is the 2nd Annual Cedar Springs Art Fest .

April 24th,  10 am – 7 pm.
Street closed from 7:00 am – 10:00 pm.

Free Community Art Festival with great artwork, fabulous artists, fun, food, drink and entertainment.

Cedar Springs road is the most eclectic street in Dallas and the heart of the gay neighborhood / Oaklawn.

Oak Lawn is known for its good restaurants, as well as its many bars and clubs. (In particular those catering to the LGBT community of Dallas.) Running through the center of Oak Lawn from downtown to Love Field is Cedar Springs Road, which has housed the center of the Dallas gay community for over 35 years at the intersection of Cedar Springs Road and Throckmorton Street.

This Arts Festival benefits the CSMA’s efforts to beatify Cedar Springs. “You won’t find us trying to sell fried sodas…or stuff with a ‘Made in China’ sticker.” Gus Klein, 2009 Event Director.

NEXT WEEKEND, is the annual Purple Foundation’s PURPLE PARTY . As they approach their 10th year, Purple Foundation is extremely proud of the accomplishments they have made thus far, donating in excess of $250,000 to beneficiaries. This year’s beneficiary is AIDS Services of Dallas.

The Annual Party Weekend brings together LGBT people  from across the country  to  enjoy some of the top DJs, entertainers and performers both nationwide and local.

VOTED ONE OF THE BEST DANCE PARTY WEEKENDS IN THE COUNTRY, Purple Party offers 10 events total  April 30th – May 2nd. Top DJs will include Chris Cox, Joe Gauthreaux, Bryan Konrad, Power, Alyson Calagna, and  Michael Tank. While some party weekends can cost as much as $400  to attend all the parties, Purple Party offers an affordable  pass for $120 which gets you access to ALL 10 events!

“For the first time all the many different influences, personalities and individuals who make up our dance community are unifying their efforts to help create this vision for a good cause. Purple is about COMMUNITY and showing our friends throughout the nation how this huge amount of talent, energy and resources can be pulled together for a common cause.”
