Zakar Twins with Drag Queen Christmas Tour and More!
I can’t remember exactly how I stumbled upon the Zakar Twins, but I found them on Instagram and have been a loyal follower, watching their careers soar for over 1 year now! Their best-selling book “Pray The Gay Away” came out in the Fall of 2017. That’s probably about the time I first discovered them.
These young gay models, writers, entrepreneurs, leaders in the LGBTQ+ community, and lovable goofballs Michael and Zach Zakar are known not only for their identical good looks but for trailblazing a path forward for queer people who come from Near and Middle Eastern cultures. As smart as they are funny, their memoir last year is a dual-account tragicomedy about growing up with deeply religious Iraqi immigrant parents.
“Mom knows.” A simple text that would change two twin brothers’ lives forever. Coming out is hard. The struggle is ongoing, a daily part of life whether to a new friend, a co-worker, or most importantly yourself. Pray the Gay Away chronicles Michael and Zach as they face awkward sexual encounters, drug-fueled escapades, coming out to each other, and their biggest foe – Mom, a woman who not only gave birth to what she calls one regret – but two.
The memoir hilariously and poignantly explores what it’s like growing up as gay, Iraqi twins in modern America. Pray the Gay Away was inspired the night Mom snuck into their bedroom and force fed them “holy grapes,” determined to “de-gay” them. She threw Holy Water on them as well!
The Zakar Twins are new voices speaking out against generations, particularly within the Iraqi culture, who look down on being gay. This book is not only for the LBGTQ community, but for young adults, looking to achieve normalcy.
“The book started kind of as a hateful thing. We wrote it because we were angry that our Mom reacted in such a demeaning way,” Zach said. “Then, over time, the project, it really resulted in kind of a beautiful thing. We were growing with the book, it was growing with us.”
Currently they are on tour with Drag Queen Christmas – The Naughty Tour! 37 cities now through Dec 29th! Presented by Murray & Peter. They will be heading South and West in the coming weeks. Get specific city and tour info at www.DragFans.com.
Their Mom has come a long way to acceptance and actually attended the show in Detroit! Her first drag show ever!
I am told that the producers, Murray and Peter are helping to bring their book to Off Broadway, hopefully in time for Pride 2019!
Recently the brothers relased a calendar for 2019. Defiance: taking a stance on changing the world’s conservative view on what it means to be gay in the Middle Eastern world. Shot by Dexter Brown.
“Everyone has their own unique story. Fortunately for us, we just wrote ours down,” Zach said with a laugh. “The book is done, but it’s not finished. We’re writing two more books about different things.”

ZT My Twin Chat App – a way to communicate with others who might be struggling with coming out or just needing someone to talk to. Many people coming out usually feel like they are the only one. So this app is a support system for those scared to talk to a stranger or a close friend.
“You cannot forget the bigger picture. It feels like life is caving in to a lot of people when it first happens. I think that’s one of the scariest things. Because all I was worried about, was when you grow up, there’s so much involved in the bigger picture,” Michael said. “That’s what I tell people, just realize there is light at the end of the tunnel even if it feels almost impossible.”
STK Steakhouse Meets Lounge
Sexy chic lounge meets modern steak house. STK.
(Chicago location in side photo)
The ONE Group, based in New York, has positioned STK as “women friendly,” trying to break the conception that steakhouses are only meant for men. A DJ booth brings a curated playlist to diners, creating more of a nightclub vibe, hoping diners opt to party after their meal, or even while they’re digesting their wet-aged beef. No need to bar hop, as STK’s other spots haven’t been as concerned about the menu as they are in developing a trendy, and sexy, scene to draw the clientele who would normally roll their eyes at the notion of dining at a steakhouse.
From Forbes to Zagat to Facebook, dinners are loving this place!
Locations AROUND THE WORLD!
Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Ibiza, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Milan, 3 locations in NYC, Orlando, South Beach, Toronto, San Diego Puerto Rico, and 2 locations in Dubai!
Recently we had the chance to sample some of their new recipes from their Fall menu in Chicago, being unveiled in October. But first, we started with their Strawberry Cobbler Martini.
Fresh strawberries, Belvedere vodka and a graham cracker rim.
Another classic that I could live on is their signature tuna tartare!
Besides what they are known for we got a sampling of some excellent new dishes!
*NEW Roasted Root Vegetable Salad: Squash, parsnip, celery root, living water greens, brown butter vinaigrette
*NEW Roasted Slagel Chicken: Celery root purée, celery salad, jus
*NEW Roasted Rack of Lamb: Charred broccoli, huckleberry vinaigrette, black garlic jus
*NEW Grilled Branzino: Roasted thumbelina carrots, kale, carrot purée, grilled lemon
Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad: Apple, cranberry, aged goat cheese, marcona almonds
Potato Bar: Creamy yukon potatoes and sweet potatoes, bacon, scallion, sour cream, cheese, marshmallows, candied pecans, short rib. TO DIE FOR!
How about finishing your meal with fresh warm doughnuts covered in various toppings?
Or perhaps their signature Chocolate mousse layered cake?
WHAT ABOUT BRUNCH? STK has a monthly brunch – Dare to Brunch – that features STK’s take on the traditional weekend meal. Offered on the last Sunday of each month, Dare to Brunch will be complete with a specialty STK brunch menu, mimosa stations that includes a variety of freshly squeezed juices and all-day DJ performances.
The Dare to Brunch menu favorites include Gold Leaf French Toast, Market Vegetable & Truffle Omelet, STK n’ L’eggs and more. The monthly Sunday event will offer three seatings (2PM, 4PM and 6PM).
Their menu features a nice variety of re-imagined classic American cuisine with signature dishes. STK defines the modern fine dining experience with incredible food, world-class service and the perfect atmosphere.
Aside from steak, signature items also include Parmesan Truffle Fries, Lil BRG’s, and sweet corn pudding. Incredible food and a wonderful hip atmosphere!

Atherton Twins in IRIS in Los Angeles
I first saw the Atherton Twins in Cirque du Soliels Varekai around 2003. I knew they stayed with the show, a number of years. And while in California last week, discovered they are now in Cirque show called IRIS!
Andrew and Kevin were born in the UK, but now live in Los Angeles, California.
Both
were members of the Great Britain gymnastics team until their
retirement from competition at the age of twenty-four years old.
In
2000 Andrew and Kevin joined the world renowned Cirque du Soleil to
develop and create an aerial straps number for their touring show Varekai. They went on to perform 3,034 shows with Varekai. Never missing a single performance.
Andrew and Kevin left Varekai in August 2010 to begin working on IRIS. A new resident show created by Cirque du Soleil, exclusively performing at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
IRIS, a Journey Through the World of Cinema. This large-scale production – created exclusively for its permanent home at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles – offers a new take on the art of cinema as only Cirque du Soleil could imagine it. IRIS is an inventive spectacle that combines acrobatics, dance, projections and live music. It takes the audience on a mesmerizing journey that blurs boundaries between live performance and moving images.
IRIS explores the different techniques of cinema, as it evolves from black and white to colour in a world of shadows and light. The story unfolds as our two young heroes venture through a universe that brings to life a succession of cinematic genres, reawakening the limitless potential of this art form.
Join acclaimed Choreographer/Director Philippe Decouflé and Oscar-nominated Composer Danny Elfman on this fantastic voyage, breathtakingly unfurled with 72 performers, 200 costumes, 8,300 square feet of performance floor, 174 loudspeakers, 603 lighting features, 20 video projectors and 160,000 watts of sound.

Rainbow Streets will Stay in West Hollywood
LA’s WEST HOLLYWOOD has decided it will permanently
keep this year’s Pride month rainbow crosswalks.
The walks span San Vicente
Boulevard at Santa Monica Boulevard, and was voted by the West Hollywood City
Council earlier this week to keep them on permanently. Initially after Gay Pride month, the bricks were to be restored the to their original red color,
but they have proved so popular, they will now be a permanent part of
the popular LGBT destination of the city, in the heart of WeHo Boystown.
Patch
reported that Councilmember John Duran said the crosswalks, as well as
the rainbow flags along Santa Monica Boulevard, are important for the
soul of the city. He said while locals may take such things for granted,
visitors do not. “[The crosswalks] are critical to the tourists and
young gay and lesbian people and not-so-young gay and lesbian people who
are passing through … They cannot believe that they actually see a
municipality where the rainbow colors are on display all year long. It
tells them it is a sanctuary. It tells them there is a safe place in
America where the LGBT community is celebrated,” he said.
Star maps with Josh Flagg in Los Angeles
so I don’t know about this app……is it an invasion of privacy?
A new iPhone tool from “Million Dollar Listing’s” Josh Flagg includes a directory of hundreds of Los Angeles-area celebrity homes.
The Huffington Post got the scoop on this in May, and was quickly followed KEN WILLIAMS (of SDGLN) interview with Josh that was published on May 25.
Hollywood stars, take note: There’s now an easier way for gawkers and stalkers to figure out where you live.
Josh Flagg, the real estate agent made famous by Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing, has launched an iPhone app that includes a directory of hundreds of Los Angeles-area properties associated with celebrities. The app, called Star Maps, differentiates itself from its traditional paper brethren by using the phone’s GPS function to direct users to properties they’d like to see.
The stargazing gawkers reportedly add lots of $$$ to the Los Angeles’ tourism business. It is estimated millions of dollars in revenue annually are made off this sector. Competition is tough. Starline Tours and newer fly-by-night tour and map purveyors are all competing.
“It is cutthroat out there,” notes Leron Gubler, president of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “They yell at each other; they yell at tourists.
The app is 99 cents. = Create your own customized guided tour to see the homes of your favorite
Hollywood stars. Josh Flagg, star of Bravo’s hit TV series “Million
Dollar Listing,” takes the star maps sold on Los Angeles street corners
and brings them to your iPhone. Star Maps includes an extensive database
of stars’ homes, top-notch GPS technology, and tons of interesting
facts and photos. All information is backed by years of public records,
which guarantees that all the information is accurate. Search by name – or most popular. More names added soon!
Gay Travel to Santa Monica – Just 10 Minutes from WeHo
Yes, most LGBT travelers know West Hollywood is the focal point of gay and lesbian life in the greater Los Angeles area. WeHo offers great clubs, restaurants and boutiques, making it a bona fide queer mecca.
What’s the one thing you won’t find in this metropolitan gayborhood? The beach. If you’re not interested in going on an expedition through the concrete jungle, head west to Santa Monica. Very fab, very gay.
Santa Monica is known for its laid-back atmosphere, world class hotels and beautiful beach area. What gay tourists might not realize is that there are several activities geared toward LGBT travelers. First and foremost you must find a great hotel located close to the beach. Loews Santa Monica is a luxurious, gay-friendly property that hosts same-sex commitment ceremonies on-site.
After you’ve checked in, strip down, throw on your bathing suit and head to the beach. Less than two miles from Santa Monica you’ll find the most well-known gay beach in the Los Angeles area, Will Rogers Beach in Pacific Palisades. Admittedly, Will Rogers is a little disappointing compared to Black’s in San Diego and other gay beaches. It’s a small, nondescript area but fine if you want to get a tan or play a game of volleyball with some bronzed hotties. Getting to the beach can be a pain if you’re driving, so your best bet is to rent a bike from one of the beachfront shops and get a little exercise before you tan. When you’re tired of hanging out in the sand, take part in an outdoor yoga class. The point is to take advantage of the sunshine, the biggest draw for out-of-towners.
Feeling a bit peckish after a long day at the beach? Head to Ocean Street, Third Street Promenade or Mid-City for a fantastic meal. Whether you’re looking for a great steakhouse, sushi or amazing Thai, there’s a venue for every taste and preference. Seafood lovers will definitely want to experience The Lobster located next to the iconic Santa Monica Pier. The surf and turf is just as incredible as the view.
I’m not a huge fan of tourist traps but even I must admit the Santa Monica Pier is fabulous! Once you get past the gaudiness of the amusement park, you’ll find that the Heal the Bay Aquarium is phenomenal and the street performers are a sight each visitor must experience at least once. What sets the Pier apart from other over the top iconic landmarks is the breathtaking view of the ocean.
Looking for LGBT nightlife in the Santa Monica area? You could drive to West Hollywood. It’s only 10 miles away but depending on traffic it might take an hour to get there. The hassle is definitely worth it but if you’re looking for something more low-key, consider a short trip into neighboring Venice. The city is a haven for artists, surfers and anyone who enjoys the wafting scent of Marijuana on every corner. Abbot Kinney Boulevard is the heart and soul of the Venice community, lined with coffee shops, eclectic boutiques and restaurants serving exotic cuisine. This is also where you’ll find the area’s only gay bar, Rooster Fish.
For more than three decades Rooster Fish has been the only game in town for the gay and lesbian Westside. When you first walk in, you feel like you’re in a straight college bar, not a beach city gay bar. It’s a small venue with two rooms but it’s a popular spot that attracts a wide variety of patrons, straight, gay, male and female.
Rooster Fish offers a great Domestic Bliss Happy Hour all week long with drink specials starting at just $3.50 from 5-7pm. There’s also an outdoor patio BBQ each Sunday from 1-6pm, where burgers and hot dogs are served.
If you’re in the Venice area at the beginning of the Month, check out First Friday. This is an incredible event where a slew of restaurants, galleries and boutiques stay open until 10pm, allowing locals and tourists to meet shop owners in a festive setting.
Santa Monica, Venice and the rest of the communities located on the Westside of Los Angeles offer gay visitors a vibe that can’t be found in any other area. This beachfront area attracts Hollywood celebrities, college students, artists, executives and musicians. Whether you live in Minneapolis or Downtown Los Angeles, you instantly feel like you’re on vacation when you arrive in town.
So what’s the most important thing each and every visitor must do in Santa Monica, gay or straight? Nothing! Whether you’re hanging out on the beach, lounging by a hotel pool or sipping espresso on a café patio, take time to rest, relax and soak up the sun. Just make sure you tweet lots of pictures to make your friends jealous.

Los Angeles Out & About Bus Tour Explores Hollywood’s Gay History
Leaving from the ONE Archives LGBT Gallery and Museum in West Hollywood, it passes 100 points of interest as the double-decker bus winds through Hollywood and Los Angeles, “blowing the dust off over a century of closeted stars, underground bars and gay rights battle scars.”
Owner Jim Anzide says, “”Doing the research for this tour has opened my heart and mind in ways I can’t begin to articulate,” said Anzide.
“Knowing that people have lost their lives, loved ones, homes, and careers so that I can do something as simple as go to a bar in West Hollywood and dance with my friends, walk hand-in-hand with someone of the same sex or live with the person I love is overwhelming. I felt ungrateful through my ignorance. I knew that I had to be part of educating and empowering my generation and future generations of LGBT people in the best way I know how – through entertainment.”
The official launch is this week! Out & About operates every Saturday and Sunday and alternating Fridays.
Tours run from 1 p.m. and ends at approximately 4 p.m. The $75 ticket includes a full day of fun and education as well as drinks and food available gratis at key stops. Must be 21 or older.
Hop on board, grab a cocktail and hang on to your wigs!
