San Francisco Site Highlights LGBT Daily Events WSUP NOW

There are lots of gay and queer events always going on San Francisco – and not one real
place that categorizes it in a easy and quick, digestible way. So  Stuart Leung came up with a site that readers can quickly scan and see whats happening in San Francisco.

I found that even after 7 years in San Francisco, I still didn’t
know what was going on at all the gay establishments in the city. I am
not a party animal or scenester that goes out five days a week, but I
am not a shut-in either.

And when I do want to go out, I want to be able to make the right
decisions. And not knowing what’s going on at 75% of the bars on any
given night, I’ll find myself relying on what is familiar and what I
am comfortable with. Sometimes I do like the tried and true, sometimes
I want to experience something different, and other times I like going
to check out other scenes.
”  says  Stuart.

“The site has been live for about four months now, so it’s still in
its infancy. We’ve consciously made the decision to fly under the
radar and grow slowly while we continued to tweak the site, improve on
the features, functionality and user experience
.”  he adds.

Hollywood to Dollywood with The Lane Twins Cross Country

IT ALL STARTED  WITH A DREAM….
AND AN RV NAMED  JOLENE.

Everybody has a dream. Most of us are only willing to go so far to see it materialize and often find ourselves waiting for the right opportunity to come to us. Not so for the Lane twins -they were not content to send their screenplay Full Circle to Dolly Parton’s manager or publicist. No, they were determined to get it into the hands of their idol and on the 25th Anniversary of Dollywood, no less.

“WE  grew up listening to Dolly’s music and always thought she was an amazing person. So why not write a screenplay about her, and go on a cross country roadtrip to try to put it in her hands! ”       say the gay Lane Twins, Gary and Larry.

And that’s just what they did.

And the result is An amazing film and journey   about courage and acceptance.

Now in 51  Film Festivals Around the World …They won 6 Awards so far!

The basic synopsis – On the fumes of a dream, twin brothers Gary and Larry Lane have written a script with a
plum roll for one of their idols, Dolly Parton. Having had no luck getting the screenplay
into her hands, they embark on a cross-country journey to personally deliver it to her. They
set off from Dolly’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame heading East for Pigeon Forge,
TN. Driving an RV they (named Jolene) is friend and partner Mike Bowen. All along
Interstate 40 at rest stops, RV parks, bars, and hair salons our intrepid band of travelers
meet everyday Americans, as the encounter everything from Floods in Nashville to an
Oklahoma Tornado.

Along Interstate 40, and we hit tornadoes, floods, screaming trannies and conservative  Christians. It was all a strange trip!”  says director John Lavin.

The journey is also one of discovery for the brothers, as well: their
relationship with their parents; their hopes, fears and ambitions; the bigotry they’ve
encountered; as they search for tolerance and acceptance and the joy of realizing their
biggest dream handing their screenplay to Dolly Parton.

Its hard to open yourself up and put yourself out there, but we would like people to know
we had amazing childhoods, and we love our mom and dad with all of our hearts, this is just
one thing mom cant accept because of her beliefs, but we still love our mom and she is truly
an amazing lady, we talk to her on the phone at least 3 times a day!”
the Lane Brothers said.

Dolly has long had legions of gay fans, I think her most public pro-gay remarks were made last year when she appeared on Larry King Live.

It made us love her all the more and we actually approached CNN and paid for the copyright and we have that footage in the movie. We got the full clearance.

It’s Dolly’s message that she loves her fans and she doesn’t judge anybody. She says only God is supposed to judge you, we’re not supposed to judge each other. A lot of people who have
seen it have said, ‘I never really knew her views but it made me love her even more.’

Dolly Parton herself Is 100% behind Our Movie and Gave us 15 Of Her Songs Free For the Documentary  and Her Image for the Movie Poster!”

(
FYI –  this would normally cost a filmmaker a small fortune!)

DON’T MISS  THIS AWESOME FILM –
COMING TO A CITY NEAR YOU!

Featuring appearances by Leslie Jordan, Chad Allen, Beth Grant, Dustin Lance Black, Ann
walker, and maybe even Dolly herself!

Best Gay Colleges in US Cities

For many gay and transgendered students, choosing a gay-friendly campus is almost as important as the college itself.

The climate on campus and in the surrounding town can mean the difference between a positive, memorable learning experience and a traumatic four years. Fortunately, many schools in the United States that have LGBT-friendly attitudes, and researching these campuses is as easy as looking up

Emory University
Campus Pride, a non-profit organization, compiles data on campuses in the United States and ranks them in terms of LGBT campus life. Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia is their top-rated campus. Emory rates high in all areas of the Campus Pride ranking system, including LGBT policy inclusion, counseling and health, campus safety, housing and residency, and LGBT recruitment and retention efforts. There are currently five student organizations at the university for LGBT students: Emory Pride, the President’s Commission on LGBT Concerns, Gay and Lesbian Alumni, the Goizueta Pride Alliance, and the Emory Medical Alliance. The school has a no-discrimination policy and offers gender-neutral housing on campus as well.

University of Pennsylvania
Newsweek recently published a list of the
top 10 gay-friendly schools and placed University of Pennsylvania at the top of their rankings. The university, which is also featured on seven of Newsweek’s other “top” lists, is a private Ivy League school in Philadelphia with an undergraduate population just over 10,000. Admission to the school is very competitive and only 17 percent of applications are accepted each year. The University of Pennsylvania actively recruits gay students and has a number of gay-friendly organizations and non-discrimination policies in place.

University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
This school ranks 11th on Newsweek’s list of most desirable large campuses and is rated among the top ten in nearly every academic category. The school is
well known for its gay-friendly atmosphere and policies, and has been place in more than one top five list of LGBT-friendly colleges. Over 20 organizations on campus support LGBT students, such as the LGBT Issues Commission, which puts together around fifteen events throughout the year. The University of Michigan offers gender-neutral housing for transgendered students. Scholarships are also available for LGBT students through the University of Michigan Lesbian and Gay Alumni Association.

Overall, these three campuses stand out among the top gay schools for their LGBT-friendly campus attitudes, non-discriminatory housing opportunities and policies, and the number of on-campus organizations that cater to and help gay students. These schools are also highly ranked in terms of academics and stand as very desirable campuses on their other merits. To find more LGBT-friendly campuses in the United States, check the Campus Pride ratings to learn more about policies and organizations around the country.

Christmas Holiday in Prague

This year, why not spend your Christmas Holidays differently…

Prague is undeniably one of the most alluring cities in the world and its peculiar Holidays and traditions just make Prague stand out among the rest.

This year why not try to experience a different Christmas Holidays in Prague.

It would be great to have a different kind of experience and spending a holiday in Prague can be a refreshing adventure.

Prague has become one of the favorite destinations of visitors all around the world.  You can make earlier plans to go to Prague to be in time for St. Nicholas Tradition being celebrated in Prague every 5th of December.   On the said day parents make a trip to Old Town Square with their children to see the celebration in full effect between 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. During this time, children in Prague receive their St. Nicholas presents from their parents, family friends, and relatives.  The traditional gifts being given to children are sweets and chocolates that will be put inside the stocking and hidden within the room of the child or children. Christmas Holidays in Prague just can’t get any better.

The story of the tradition dates back in 4th century in Greece when a bishop known as Nicholas left something for three poor girls on the windowsill in a form of gift money to help them in getting married.  On the evening of St. Nicholas Tradition don’t be surprised to run into some strange characters that represent St. Nicholas, the Angel, and the Devil.  All are wearing costumes and St. Nicholas’ costume is almost the same as that of the traditional Santa Claus costume known all over the world.  One can say that Christmas Holidays in Prague officially began on December 5th.

Aside from the opening celebration of Christmas Holidays in Prague, there are also Christmas markets in Prague that had been a part of their tradition that tourists also enjoy visiting.  Children will have a different kind of experience that will enrich their lives forever.  Prague is a city that can offer some unique and memorable experiences that can be treasured forever.

The most popular markets are on the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square where Christmas items are sold in 70 to 80 stands. Smaller ones are located on Namesti Republiky, Havelske Trziste and Namesti Miru. They are all easily accessible by subway.

The markets themselves consist of traditional wooden chalets that line the market squares and are nicely decorated. You will find there traditional Christmas decorations, holiday items and hand-crafted gifts together with fresh food and drinks. They are usually open from 9am to 7pm.

A Magnificent place to stay right near everything is  JEWEL  HOTEL. Originally build as a old bourgeoisie house. Some of the original brickwork from the beginning of 13th century can be found in it’s basement.Over the centuries the house was rebuild many times and therefore many architectural styles can be found here. The gold painted ceiling with the motifs of jewels in the ground floor is very unique and is also heritage listed. This decoration was created at the beginning of the 20th century when a prestigious jeweler come into the building. The repair of the crown jewels of Czech Monarchs was one of his many commissions. Therefore the name – Jewel (U Klenotníka). The whole building was reconstructed and turned into a hotel in 1994. The house kept it’s historical look, but at the same time it is elegantly furnished with modern interior and some art pieces of contemporary artist were installed.

They also offer special packages, like a Wine Appreciaition package, Girls Getaway package,  and  a Romance gift basket. Jewel Café Bar and Restaurant is connected to the hotel. It  will absorb you with its uniqueness and ambient atmosphere. More than 10,000 crystals will attract your eyes. Sense of smell and taste will be satisfied with our fine modern cuisine. Every two months  a new menu is created  by the chefs. Amazing food – reasonably priced. Check availability and book online!

December 24 is the most gratifying day of the Christmas Holidays in Prague.  Its Czech name when translated means ‘Generous Day’ which can be attributed to the food being served for dinner at Christmas.  The eve of Christmas for many Czechs usually has connections with their superstitious beliefs that have something to do with destiny, love, and life.  One Czech tradition at Christmas believes that fasting in that particular day will make them see the ‘golden piglet’ when night falls.

Christmas Holidays in Prague will truly be one great experience to enjoy.  Czechs have many exciting and peculiar things to offer and all are treasures worth experiencing.

Dallas Gay FundRaising Super Hero Patti Le Plae Safe

DALLAS VOICE did a great article this week  on Rodd Gray aka Patti Le Plae Safe.

For 25 years now,  has lived sort of a double life: By day, he is mild-mannered hair stylist Hott Rodd the Hair God, but by night he transforms into , fundraising super hero!  Raising thousands of dollars for  AIDS charities, as well as other causes.

Gray described himself as an independent person who can take care of himself, and who also wants to try to help take care of others, too. It’s a philosophy that grew, he said, from his Orange Power, the name he has for his personal spirituality that grew out of a blend of what he saw as the best teachings from more traditional teachings.

“I just think of it as this warm, orange glow that surrounds me and protects me, and that makes me want to keep doing the right thing,” Gray said. “That’s what it’s about, really: doing the right thing. Paying it forward.

“I watched that movie, Pay It Forward, back when it came out, and it really changed my life,” Gray continued. “That’s what I had always tried to do anyway, but that movie really made me think about it, really made me recommit myself to that.”

Gray said he “stopped counting” years ago, but that he estimates that Patti Le Plae Safe, in all her incarnations and at events around the country, has raised “well over $1 million” for charity through the years. But he is also quick to add that it’s not the amount that’s important; what’s important is that he tried.

PLEASE  read the full article at the Dallas Voice.  It is very heartwarming, inspirational, and motivational

Made in Columbus Ohio – Gay and Gay Friendly

On our recent trip to Columbus Ohio I was very impressed with the cities’ strong farm-to-table attitude and the amount of home grown industry happening there!  Sure they’ve got big business companies like Abercrombie & Fitch / the Limited Brand and also  modern Columbus has emerged as a technologically sophisticated city, Forbes Magazine  ranked the city as the no. 1 up-and-coming tech city in the nation.

But we saw the big trend here of producing locally  and delivering locally, EVERYWHERE.  The freshest ingredients and unprocessed food and products. Businesses in Columbus Ohio are really trailblazing. Farm-to-Table, Cow-to-Cone, & Silo-to-Still…. Columbus is blessed by its proximity to fertile farmland and wonderful seasonal produce.

In the coming weeks, we’ll  talk more in depth about great dining spots, things to see and do,  and  gay clubs – but today I want to share a few of our Columbus Ohio discoveries.

Who doesn’t want a SUGAR DADDY?  I mean the brownies. Award-winning Sugardaddy’s Sumptuous Sweeties®, Purveyors of The Edgeless Brownie®, has redefined the cozy, American classic brownie into a truly luxury dessert indulgence, gifting, and special occasion experience. Sunny Meadows Flower Farm is operated by Steve and Gretel Adams and is located 6 miles from downtown Columbus, on the city’s southeast side. “Currently we farm about 7 acres of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. We use organic practices and although we are not certified, this still means no chemicals are used, just lots of love!

Our mission is to educate the public about the quality and vase life of local flowers. Although you can get flowers for dirt cheap flown in from the equator, the workers do not have the same rights and protections, and there are fewer restrictions on chemicals. So, who knows what you are really buying into? As a farm specializing in all naturally grown fresh cut flowers, we are trying to show people just how important supporting your local flower farm really is.” –  I fell in love with Gretels Soap! Gretel’s natural soap is formulated for the health of one’s mind, body and soul.

Perfect for everyday use or as a gift, every ingredient in these hand-made soaps serves a purpose and has been carefully harvested and selected. A balance of coconut oil, palm oil, beeswax, and soybean oil provide a great lather and keep your skin moist. Additional ingredients, like herbs or coffee, provide a brilliant texture to gently exfoliate the skin. I have a bar (Sweet Earth)  sitting on my bathroom sink, and it makes the room so fragrant!  ORDER YOURS ONLINE.

Local beer lovers are “uncorking” ROCKMILL, the artisan sensation handcrafted in the Central Ohio countryside. 40 minutes from downtown Columbus is Rockmill Brewery. Located a sprawling property, this one time horse farm is now a special kind of place where invigorating flavors are brewing. This modern, certified organic “nano-brewery”  taps into an ancient, glacier-created underground spring to produce a world-class Belgian-style ale. One barrell at a time!  Handcrafted with a stubborn adherence to old-world methodologies.

Matthew Barbee is the young brewmaster at the helm. “Thousands of years ago as the glaciers melted, this water carved out the blackhand sandstone which today forms the origin of the Hocking River. A unique geographic feature that is only a short walk west from the Rockmill Farm. Many thousands of years after the glaciers melted, savy farmers in Wallonia, Belgium came to the genius conclusion that an ale is easy to produce, store and is an excellent vitamin-rich, motivator out in the field. This miracle beverage is now known as Saison, a farmhouse ale.

Roughly 150 years later we came to the realization that the water on our farm is almost identical in mineralitiy as the water found in Wallonia. How convienent! This was the primary inspiration for our four brews. Our water combined with all organic yeast, hops and malt is what gives our brew the aromatic qualities and taste that it does.”

His four brews are currently available at restaurants and retail outlets in Ohio, and he is having  a hard time keeping up with  the growing demands – but he plans to grow and take his product all over the country, very soon!

Not every city can boast a truly local micro-distilled spirit of choice, but Columbus has one : Short North-based Middle West Spirits makes a vodka called OYO (“O-Why-O”), the original Native American word for the Ohio River Valley.

Founded and run by Ryan Lang (left) and Brady Konya ( right), the company uses grain from within a local 50-mile microclimate, and relies on small batch precision and drop-dead gorgeous German-made artisanal equipment to produce a superior product.

WE HAVE BEEN BRAINWASHED in America.  That vodka should have NO TASTE. The common American idea is that vodka needs to be as tasteless as possible.

Rather than fix their product on the back end with flavor additives or over filtering, OYO works almost like a single malt Scotch producer, using carefully controlled distilling and blending to hit their target flavor profile. OYO is not anything like your standard, made for the American market, vodka. “Big distillers, because of how they produce, aren’t able to cut bad stuff out up front, so they have to filter it,” says Konya. “So you’ll see a lot of smart marketers talk about filtering — lava, ceramic, diamonds — six times, eight times, 20 times distilled — all of that is marketing.” – Can you believe that?!

The Beverage Testing Institute (BTI) is a marketing service company that provides reviews for spirits, wines, and beers. It uses numerical scores and publishes books of its test results. BTI gave OYO  Vodka  a 92 last fall!  90-95  is EXCEPTIONAL.  (Dan Akroyds Crystal head is a 89, Effen is an 84, and Vox is a 96, to give you some comparisons).

In just one year, OYO is spreading all over Ohio –  and soon, to a State near you!
Weekly tours and tastings – check their site for details. They have a storefront with their three main drinks as well as cool t-shirts and things. 1230 Courtland Ave , Columbus OH, 43201

Mead Wine? Simply put, mead is  wine made from honey. It takes 6 months to 2 years to make a mead, depending on the recipe.  The longer mead is aged in tanks and in bottles, the more amazing. “Our mead is meant to be aged like the finest artisanal products and enjoyed leisurely,”  says  BROTHERS DRAKE owner Woody Drake.  Brothers Drake makes award-winning mead in Columbus, Ohio using pure honey and the best locally-sourced ingredients.

Since 2008, “We continue to grow and expand a selection of exquisite meads made locally in Columbus, OH from as raw local wildflower honey as we can get and all natural ingredients sourced as organically as is possible in Ohio. ” Mead is arguably and understandably one of the oldest beverages known to mankind on every continent. Over the many centuries, people have modified the recipe and, with over 150 meaderies in the United States, the current century is no exception.

Brothers Drake is open for Open for Tastings, Tours, & Sales. 26 E. 5th Avenue, Columbus, OH 43201

LinkedIn Pulls Ad for Gay Travel Guide

Canada’s  XTRA  reports, “The professional networking site LinkedIn has pulled an ad for a gay travel guide, claiming it contains “inappropriate content or language.”

“It’s baffling,” says Robert Christofle at Open Mic Press/Icon Empire Press.

Christofle says he’s been promoting The Gay Travel Guide For Tops And Bottoms on a variety of sites, many of them straight, without incident. But LinkedIn, which has networks ostensibly catering to gay professionals, censored the ad.

LinkedIn says it pulled the ad due to its sexual content.

“LinkedIn is a professional networking platform and, as such, there has never been a place on it for ads that feature or promote explicit sexual content or products of any kind,” spokesperson Danielle Restivo told Xtra on Sept 1.

LinkedIn says it pulled the ad due to its sexual content.

“LinkedIn is a professional networking platform and, as such, there has never been a place on it for ads that feature or promote explicit sexual content or products of any kind,” spokesperson Danielle Restivo told Xtra.

Google Ad and Facebook haven’t objected to the ad, Christofle notes. “Out of the three different advertising sites, only LinkedIn has a target gay networking site, and they are the only ones to pull the ad.”

GAY COLUMBUS…Conservative Ohio city becoming an LGBT hub of the Midwest

The state’s capital and nation’s 16th largest city, Columbus is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States and currently has a population of just over one million.

Mayor Michael Coleman
, says he actively promotes Columbus as a gay-friendly market to the rest of the country. He welcomes the LGBT Community in ColumbUS. ” Where the US, means all of us,” he said recently, as 14 LGBT journalists from around the world were invited to Columbus.

Gay Travel.com  named Columbus its Most Underrated Gay City and
Gay Cities.com
named Columbus as the Up-and-Coming Gay City of 2011.

Andrew Collins points out that Columbus has two of the components that make for a great gay scene: it has a major collegiate presence (Ohio State University), and it’s a center of government (being the state capital). An extremely high number of gays and lesbians live here, and enjoy its lively downtown neighborhoods (such as the gay-popular Short North and German Village areas). Columbus has one of the Midwest’s best culinary reputations, a high number of art galleries, numerous gay sports clubs, and a youthful but unpretentious gay club scene.

Columbus has a widespread LGBT population with $7.5 billion in purchasing power that has helped establish the queer community as an integral part of the culture.

In the eighites, gay people ran to big cities. They spruced up all the property, created every art and fashion movement, and taught entire populations how to dance.

They created gayborhoods like WeHo, Chelsea, boystown and South Beach—and pretty much queered all of San Francisco. As more and more gays come out, we are, literally, everywhere, and seem to feel less need to move to the gayborhood.

Iowa City, Austin, and Asheville have more gays per capita than the biggies. And yes, Columbus, Ohio!  These cities where everyday gays live—towns and boroughs with a mix of baby carriages, gay bars, and B&Bs—signal the continuing movement of gay people into mainstream American life.

Located in the center of the state, halfway between Cleveland and Cincinnati,  Columbus is within 550 miles of more than half of the U.S. population, making it an easy get away from anywhere in the Midwest!

Gay Jazz blossoms in Europe – GALLAVIN is Mad About The Boy

Pully  Switerland….
Pully
is a municipality in Switzerland in the canton of Vaud, located in the district of Lavaux-Oron.

It is one of the eastern suburbs of the city of Lausanne, located on the shores of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) and at the foot of the vineyards of Lavaux on the road to Vevey and Montreux.

While it may not be the gayest place on earth, you can find Gallavin there!

Gallavin swings with the boundaries of genders. Independent jazz singer, Gallavin releases his first music video of “Mad about the Boy”, Noël Coward most famous song.

JAZZ AND GAY…With the participation of the artists-travesties of the Cabaret-Bar “Chez Maman” in Brussels, the Anglo-Swiss jazz singer plays with the social norms, and offers a music video rich of identities but also sexual diversities.

In the velvet world of vocal jazz, no one was expecting that the song of Noël Coward Mad about the Boy, mostly known for Dinah Washington’s interpretation, could be once sung by a man.

And yet, it seems that Noël Coward had in fact written that song for his long term partner Graham Payn, a South-African actor. Gallavin intends, through his interpretation, to give the song its original essence back, and places himself beyond the traditional values of vocal jazz where one is either a “Crooner” or a “Diva”.

Willing to question the social norms of a musical world rather conservative, Gallavin casts the artists-travesties of the legendary Cabaret-Bar “Chez Maman” in Brussels. They become the time of the song the main characters blurring the lines between genders and sexual attraction, and opening a world where girls, who are actually boys, are mad about a boy who is in love with a girl, who was once a boy…

The music video of Mad about the Boy can be seen on Gallavin’s Internet website Gallavin.com or on Gallavin’s Youtube page Youtube.com/user/MrGallavin.

Steven William Derendinger (- Gallavin) was born on the 27th September 1975 in Sierre. Swiss and British, he grew up in Lausanne where he studied at the University of Lausanne and was graduated
with a Master of Arts (MA).

He began to sing as an autodidact and took part in different local musical productions. He formed the jazz band “Late Nights” in 1999, with which he performed in different
venues such as the Cully Jazz Festival. He recorded previously in 1996 a demo album with seven original songs with his band “Mind the Sun.”

In parallel, Steven committed as a volunteer for the LGBT rights where he worked from August 2004 until March 2010 as president of the Association VoGay in the canton Vaud. He appeared formerly in
2000 in the publication of Stéphane Riethauser, “A visage découvert”. In 2003, Steven worked for his final academic paper on “the linguistic insecurity of gay men in western Switzerland”. This paper was
published twice. (Michael Groneberg, « L’homme – créature sexuelle », 2006, et Christophe Bareille, « Homosexualité : révélateur social ? », 2010).

Beside his associative commitments, Steven worked on the promotion of gay men’s health. In April
2005, he began his career as a scientist collaborator in the AIDS unit of the Federal Office of Public Health in Bern, where he became quickly project manager for HIV prevention among gay men and male prostitution in Switzerland. Meanwhile, Steven never left his musical activities and defined in 2008 the project Mad about the Boy, which he produced independently in 2009, and released in 2010.

For Steven, this debut album articulates one decade of involvement in the LGBT rights and the promotion of gay men’s health with his solo career as an independent jazz singer under the name of  Gallavin.

With the album Mad about the Boy, Gallavin places himself beyond the stereotypes of “Crooner or
Diva” in jazz. Through his interpretation, Gallavin gives to some of the greatest jazz songs their
original essence back. Noël Coward’s song Mad about the Boy – mostly known for Dinah
Washington’s interpretation – was written, for instance, for his long term lover, Graham Payn, a South African actor. Cole Porter – authors of the most known American vocal jazz songs – was also homosexual. The consideration of his homosexuality opens then infinite new fields of interpretation of his work. Gallavin offers with Mad about the Boy, an intimate and sometimes fragile album. Orchestrated by Pierre Sottas, the album is open to all vocal jazz lovers regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.

First Gay Pride Celebration in Prague a Big Success

Several thousand people marched in the first LGBT Pride parade in the Czech capital Saturday as riot police contained antigay protesters assembled to decry the event.

As Saturday’s march went ahead in light drizzle, riot police held back dozens of far-right extremists who had gathered to shout abusive slogans. But the abuse and moist conditions did not dampen the party atmosphere, as marchers danced to music played from loudspeakers mounted on vans.

The BBC reports on the inaugural Pride march and five-day festival, which took place despite claims from Deputy Chancellor Petr Hajek that Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda should not support “deviant fellow citizens.” Conservative president Vaclav Klaus backed his aide, but 13 countries, including the United States, issued a statement in support of the celebration.

The BBC reports that Some 300 police officers worked the scene to prevent the kind of clashes between participants and counterprotesters that occurred at a Pride march in Brno, the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, in 2008.

The march was to culminate in a series of concerts on an island in the Vltava river, as part of a five-day festival comprising some 80 events — concerts, films, seminars, exhibitions and parties — in 30 venues around the capital.
